Judy has the best wake up alarm on her phone. The music has a way
of easing you out of your sleeping stupor and into the day. All was well in my
world. Then I went to the window to see the jeep covered in ice.
Judy looked out and asked, "Is that
snow?"
"Nope, it's ice I replied."
The weather channel informed us that it was a blistering two
degrees outside. Welcome to Nebraska, I thought to myself. After breakfast we
began loading the jeep. As the jeep was warming up I noticed anti-freeze
dripping onto the asphalt. I shut the engine down and raised the hood to see
what was going on. Thank Goodness it was only a loose radiator cap.
A little twist and we were back in business.
After getting the jeep loaded we were getting ready to leave.
After several minor mishaps, plus the ice, and the leak, the day wasn’t shaping
up to be a good one. At this point the only choice we had was to make it get
better. So off we went.
Interstate 76 runs beside the Platte River from Nebraska to
Colorado. Soon after we entered onto the interstate we saw a pair of bald
eagles, then a large hawk and more bald eagles. The river was absolutely
beautiful as it was covered in ice and glistened with the sun’s rays. The day
was getting better already. As we drove along the interstate taking in Mother
Nature’s beauty we saw what looked to be thousands of medium size birds off in
the distance. As we got closer we realized they were geese. Not just Canada
Geese, there were also large numbers of Snow Geese amongst them. We decided to
see if we could get a bit closer for some pictures. We did not get as close as
we would have preferred, however we managed to get a couple of shots.
Returning to the interstate gave us many more miles of farm land
than I think I have ever seen. There were so many old farms that radiated their
own form of beauty.
After a bit, we came upon another pond along the road side with a
large group of Canada Geese and various types of ducks. Then right there on the
edge of the pond sat a Golden Eagle in all its magnificent glory. We managed to
get stopped only to realize the eagle had some sort of prey it was feeding on.
Our stopping sent the bird into flight. Judy and I both felt bad that we had
scared it off its food. It only flew a short distance and landed so we left in
hopes it would return to feeding.
Not long after that we hit the Colorado line. What I discovered
here was from the time you get into Colorado until you reach Denver, CO it
is very monotonous. There were several large ranches and prairie dog towns along this route.
Above Denver was when we hit the snow. We traveled up, and up,
and up, and up until we hit 11,000 feet. The best part of this ride was when
Judy saw an elk standing in the snow on the side of the mountain.
We have stopped in Dillon, CO for the night and will be in Moab
tomorrow. The snow has stopped for now it is very beautiful outside and not as
cold as it was this morning.
The day turned out to be a great one.
We are getting closer to a time and place for playing the
Awakening Drum. I can't wait to share those
times.
