negative affect on her. Water erodes her to form canyons. Fire will scorch her face only to return in beauty. All
of these start out in their own mysterious way and then visually manifest themselves into something that is physical and tangible. The water will drop from the sky in the form of snow rain, mist or dew and accumulate into a river, lake or stream we can see. Fire will start from a bolt of lightning, heat of the sun or we as humans may use our own ability to start a visible fire. Mankind had used these elements in our everyday functions. Even though we are now beginning to understand there are ways to help us improve our life with air, wind is still our most elusive and magical element. During a storm you will see the powerful destruction the wind will cause. On a hot summer night you will feel and enjoy the cool breeze that will bring some relief from the heat. When you add water to wind, the effect of the winds cooling ability is even more powerful. You feel the strength of the wind in the harsh bite it will bring to you in the winter months. All of these are felt or they can be heard as someone blows the wind of their breath into a Native American flute and its sweet sound fills your ear and passes into
your inner self.
Then there is the magical connection between this invisible element and a child. I feel called to share an experience gifted to Judy and me several years ago. A friend that we met when we moved to North Carolina has a special needs child. She is wonderful blessing to all that she meets. One day before we had met this child, her father and I were talking. He mentioned that he wished there was an instrument that she could play because her brother played the guitar and she wanted to play the guitar badly. However she was unable to even hold the guitar, much less play it. Because I play the drum and I love to share playing it with everyone I asked if it would be OK if Judy and I came over and shared this with his daughter. He agreed, so Judy and took with us some of
our small frame drums and I took my djembe. When we arrived, we were introduced to this young girl and chatted for a short time as we wanted everyone to be comfortable with us. After a bit we decided to walk down to the creek that ran in front of their house. There were two medium sized maple trees there, some chairs, and a picnic table. At first she was reluctant to play. As everyone else began to play and laugh and have an enjoyable time, she became more comfortable. I asked her again if she would like to play and this time her answer was, “Yes, but by myself please.” We all thought this was great. Judy handed her a small frame that she had recently ordered for herself. As this small child accepted the drum in her left hand, she cradled it up to her chin as if she were playing a violin. She then accepted the beater from Judy in her right hand. As she began to play, she closed her eyes. The sound of the drum began to fill the air with her own rhythm. Then, the most amazing thing happened. She began saying in a very soft voice, “wind, wind, come to me wind.” She repeated this several time and as if by magic the leaves of the maple trees began to dance to the rhythm of her drumbeats. We all looked to one another in amazement since up until that moment; the day had been completely calm with no rustle of breeze. None of us said a word. As she continued to play and call for the wind, the wind continued to answer her call. Tears began to roll down our faces as she played. I know this was a very magical time for all of us. And just as this had all began it ended. As soon as she struck her last beat on the drum, and as she stopped her call to the wind, the wind stopped answering immediately. She handed the drum back to Judy, at which time Judy said, “I do believe this drum belongs to you.” She said thank you, turned, and walked up to
the house with her new drum as if this was just another day.
That day we were all blessed to witness this small miracle. This innocent child called forth one of the most powerful elements, wind. That’s the day I learned just as we breathe in and out our breath creates wind. That day was the day a child called the breath of our Great Creator to touch us all.
